It was something that should have never happened. This past Comfest in June 2019, members of the fascist group Proud Boys volunteered at Comfest and were welcomed. Despite the 2019 mission statement including the phrase “combating resurgent fascism” Proud Boys were allowed to pick up trash while wearing t-shirts and hats advertising their group and their beliefs, and after the objections of community groups who were alerted, were allowed to get free beer and police protection.

Do you ever talk to yourself when alone? Mutter “good God” when you read a stunning twist of plot in a book or shout “holy shit!” when you open a bill? Do you swear aloud after an argument on the phone? Have you ever threatened a telemarketer after hanging up? Do you struggle with your private thoughts and discuss them with your loved ones at night as is considered healthy? Do you have friends that you discuss your private thoughts and ideas in your home? Does your subconscious cause you to talk in your sleep? Everyone does one or more of these things.
Censoring the entire government on the topic of climate change is one of the hallmarks of the Trump administration. It is also something that creepy Uncle Joe Biden can reach across the aisle and make a bipartisan hair sniff and handshake over. Yesterday, August 25th, Trump snubbed the rest of the G-7 by not attending the attending the climate change session of the conference. Just four days before, the Democratic National Committee voted to snub the American public by not allowing climate change to enter into the Democratic debates.
The saying goes, edgelords gotta edge. That would apply here except there is nothing edgy about 614 Magazine. The publications actual non-advertising content (which is thin) has never been very interesting. It's like the New Yorker for frat boys with a second grade reading level. The rest of their content is bar ads and stories about bars sprinkled with a mumbled review of whatever Dave Mathews Band knockoff is on it's latest “world” tour... of the arena district. When I worked at the Columbus Free Press it was referred to as “Eat here you drunk yuppie fuck monthly.” around the office.
On Saturday August 17th, the Neo-Nazi Proud Boys were marching in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, where they feel good and comfortable. Their comfortable support was not just for the President who supported them on twitter, but for their fellow Proud Boys in Portland Oregon. That bunch of fascists was marching alongside the group that organized the event, Patriot Prayer, and under the protection of an exceedingly violent Neo-Nazi organization called the American Guard.
Why Trump's plan to buy Greenland is not as stupid as the man who announced it. Actually, it's evil.
Greenland is a place that you do not want to be unless you are from there. The obvious problem is cold. If one has read Jared Diamond's Collapse, one knows that Greenland is one of the few places on Earth that Europeans failed to succeed in colonizing, and finally failed at even surviving in. The status of the 56,000 mostly indigenous people who live there as Danish Citizens of an autonomous region make it unique in the world. This why the world got a unique laugh when Donald Trump offered to buy it from Denmark. The Danes were perplexed.
Although CNN reported on August 11th that there was a circulating draft of an executive order to censor social media in order to make it more “fair” for “conservatives” and the network has claimed to be in possession of the text, they have yet to release it. Many news outlets, both large and small, have commented on the order, almost uniformly in the negative. Without the text they are mostly doing so without any real knowledge, and are speculating, with input from their picked legal scholars on a draft.
Some people are called journalists and should not be allowed the title. The only justification for calling Andy Ngo a journalist is that CNN (which actually gave him air time) and the NY Post (which allowed him to repeat his claim that the recent mass shooter in Dayton was an anti-fascist activist) have for giving him space is they use the qualifier “conservative journalist.” Fascist propagandist is a better monicker, as Ngo writes for Quillette, which fancies itself libertarian but has been called “the voice of the intellectual dark web” by Politico.
Columbus is not a sanctuary city, despite the claims of the big fat liar in charge, Andy Ginther. It has not gone so far as to literally unleash the hounds (or in this case German Sheppard attack dogs) on behalf of ICE like the Ohio State Patrol, but contrary to resolutions in support of individual immigrants seeking sanctuary and other public pronouncements, the Columbus Division of Police does assist ICE in roundups.
